“SAA Power Tools in C”, eine Software-Bibliothek mit Dokumention und Anwendungsbeispielen als Buch plus Diskette

Die “SAA Power Tools” sind eine Software-Bibliothek, die ich Anfang der Neunziger Jahre im Rahmen einer Artikelserie für das offizielle “Microsoft System Journal” entwickelt und für die Buchausgabe ergänzt hatte.

Zu dieser Zeit war es etwas völlig Neues, eine wertvolle Software-Bibliothek mit gedruckter Dokumentation für “nur” 98,- DM zu veröffentlichen, und die anschließende Nutzung komplett freizustellen. Heute würde man von “Open-Source” sprechen. Doch dieser Begriff war damals noch weitgehend unbekannt.

Die Bibliothek ermöglichte es Entwicklern, mit wenig Aufwand eine Fenster- und Mausorientierte Benutzeroberfläche in ihre Anwendungen für MS-DOS zu integrieren.  Zahllose Anwendungen von großen und kleinen Software-Unternehmen erhielten mit Hilfe dieser Bibliothek ihr Gesicht. Im Bereich der Maschinensteuerung sind einige dieser Anwendungen noch heute aktiv.

So staunte ich nicht schlecht, als ich vor eingen Jahren zum ersten Mal die Konfiguraiton meiner ISDN-Anlage ändern wollte – die entsprechende Software der Telekom war offenkundig mit Hilfe meiner Bibliothek entstanden. Auch bei Industrie-Anlagen von Siemens u.a. ist die Bibliothek weitflächig zum Einsatz gekommen.
